A New York minute.

What can be said about New York that has not been said before? The city is what they say it is and some more. I was in New York last summer for too short of a weekend. From my perspective, it is impossible to explore New York in just three days. However, I tried to experience as much as I could, given my limited amount of time.

Brownstone

My friend graciously hosted me at her apartment. She lives in an area that is home to some of the most beautiful brownstone buildings. You don’t have to be an architectural aficionado to admire these chef- d’oeuvres. The neighborhood has an interesting history with European immigrants first to move there. Then, during the great migration, an influx of African-Americans from the South settled, changing the demographic patterns. As a result, the neighborhood is now very much mixed with a strong cultural diversity from across the African diaspora.

Consequently, I cannot tell you anything about the best hotels and their amenities. Perhaps, it will be for another time. But, what I can tell you is that the city is tantalizing. From the sounds, the smells and the activities, New York offers endless possibilities. Indeed, this is the place where dreams come true and you work to the bone to make it happen. It is a hustler’s town. The pace is fast. Hence, people walk in a frenzy towards the path of whatever set their souls on fire.

I was there in those streets and my senses got electrified. Evidently, the pandemic did not seem to have stripped the city of its fighter’s spirit. Although, my friend told me, that the city has slow down. However, all I could see was the relentless will of a people who refuse to back down.

Somehow, this great city reminded me of a much more different place where dreamers are plenty, but opportunities are scarce. As a result, these people go wherever the wind blows in search of a better life.  I guess, it is a universal code of people from tough places, who, armed with their indestructible hope and resiliency will make life happen no matter what.

Taking the train in New York.

On the day of my arrival, I took the train to my friend’s apartment. Taking the train was an experience in itself for me, as the subway system does not exist in South Florida. You must pay attention to the overhead voice announcing the next destination or you’ll end up in the other side of town. Don’t worry, it did not happen to me (or maybe it nearly did lol) . Furthermore, be very aware of your surroundings because you’ll see some interesting things. Oh, have I seen some peculiar things every time I took the train: unspeakable things, hilarious things!

Passing through Chinatown.

The same day, I visited Chinatown. It is a bustling town with interesting shops and the most amazing eateries. I had some of the best dumplings I have ever eaten. Also, I tried a dessert made out of black beans. It is called lotus bean paste. The bun is fluffy and it is filled with a subtle sweeten beans paste that reminds you of peanut butter but without the stickiness.

A lovely night in Williamsburg.

Later on, we went to the Williamsburg hotel where my friend celebrated her birthday. And no, I can’t tell you much about the amenities because we only had access to the rooftop. However, I can tell you the place is modern and chic. In addition, the view is breathtaking. Furthermore, based on the service we had, I would say it is worth checking out.

Although, the rain started pouring, the party still went on. Despite the rain, people were coming out, and we danced through it. The view was spectacular. The city light, the skylines were just amazing. Moreover, I met interesting people. The Drinks were flowing, food was delicious. Conversations were easy. It was a beautiful night.

Brooklyn museum.

The next day, we headed to the Brooklyn museum of art. They had pieces from all over the world. Furthermore, they had pieces from artists that depicted the current societal problems.  Of course I wanted to visit the Met museums but with so little time, it was an impossible goal. Next time…

And the adventure continues…

Afterwards, we headed down to DUMBO (down under the Manhattan bridge overpass) where we got to enjoy the view of the Brooklyn and the Manhattan bridges.

I hopped on the Jane carousel and like a 10 year old, I enjoyed my ride on the fake horse. Then, we took the ferry to Manhattan where we roamed the street of Wall-street. I could not help myself but to take a picture with the Bull. After all, that is the only reason one goes there anyway. I could not believe how long the line was, to do just that. So, I was a little creative and avoided spending hours in that line. I have also taken a picture of the defiant girl in front of the massive financial building of what symbolizes capitalism. I attempted to match her energy. Would you say I did? I think I did.

Exploring the city solo.

The following day, I got to explore the city by myself.  I did not know I could enjoy wandering a big city such as New York alone. Understand, I am from a small town and it never occurred to me to go in an adventure such as this one solo. I am usually with friends or family when travelling. So, this was a first.

I visited the Grand Central Terminal which is art in itself. It was open to the public in 1913 and it is still fully operational. I felt like I was in a movie where I was the main character kissing goodbye to my lover for the last time, under this ceiling of stars.

After grabbing a bite, I walked to the Rockefeller center and went to the top of the building. The view was breathtakingly beautiful. I got to see the whole city up there. Moreover, I saw Central park and multiple skylines.

Afterwards, I walked through Central Park. Of course, I did not explore the whole park- this park is humongous- but it was nice walking around, then I headed home. In addition, my feet were sore, but my heart was full, and it was a fulfilling day.

A busy last day.

On my last day, I met with a longtime friend of mine. We have not seen each other since high school. So, I walked the Brooklyn bridge to Manhattan where we met and grabbed lunch.

Then, we headed to SOHO. It is a trendy spot with unique shops. SOHO is a French neighborhood with eclectic little café. We went to Laduree where we enjoyed coffee and macaroons and reminisced about the past and had some much needed girl talk. Unsurprisingly, It was a great little reunion.

Time square.

Afterwards, we made our way towards Time square. Time square was beautiful, noisy and messy. In fact, if you like to people watch, Time square is the place. I was entertained just by standing there watching people move. People were performing all kinds of shows. Besides, it seems like everyone was in their own movie set playing the leading role of their own script.

Later on, I had to quickly catch my night flight to Florida, daydreaming about all the things I did not get to do.

My stay in New York was too short but nonetheless mesmerizing. Definitely, something about the city draws you in. No matter how you feel about New York, this city will leave you with an indelible imprints that will forever change you.

Until next time,

XoXo,

JP
